Robert Noyce: 1927-1990
Early Life and Education (1927-1949)
Robert Noyce, known as the "Mayor of Silicon Valley," was born on December 12, 1927, in Burlington, Iowa. He pursued his passion for physics and mathematics at Grinnell College and later received a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Co-founding Fairchild Semiconductor and Silicon Valley Rise (1957-1968)
Noyce's career in the semiconductor industry began in earnest when he co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. Based in San Jose, Fairchild became a pioneering company in the Silicon Valley tech boom. Noyce's co-invention of the integrated circuit revolutionized the electronics industry.
Intel Corporation and Microprocessor Development (1968-1990)
In 1968, Noyce co-founded Intel Corporation in Santa Clara, near San Jose. Under his leadership, Intel developed the first commercially successful microprocessor. Noyce's vision and management style were instrumental in establishing Silicon Valley's culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
